 Well, after coming back for the white house event and the following week, I managed to not post anything at all last week. Saturday was my dad's birthday paired with father's day on Sunday, so I just didn't have the time to get out any predictions or bets. I only was able to see a bit of the Fili vs Lok Dog fight and then the main event. Kape kind of did what he tends to do and sat back and was eventually able to find the big counter shot to put Kyoji away. I didn't even think he looked all that bad, but at the same time, there's a reason we don't see guys at his age at the very top of the division in the smaller weight classes all that often. It feels like Kape should have the next title shot after the UFC finally runs Van vs Pantoja back. Who knows how long Kape will be on the sidelines now though, which is kind of unfortunate for him, not that he's the most active fighter in the world, but it just kind of accentuates why doing Van vs Taira instead of the...

 Josh Hokit has been the talk of the MMA world and, in large part, due to his bizarre comments regarding former first lady Michelle Obama, his name has escaped the MMA sphere as well. Unfortunately for the UFC and the sport of MMA at large, it is not the good kind of attention, which it rarely is when MMA is getting talked about alongside mainstream sports or the greater news cycle in general. You don't need me to sit here and tell you that what he said was stupid and unnecessary. It takes little more than a few functioning braincells to figure that out. I think a more fruitful conversation to have is how should the UFC go about this because I don't know that there typical response is going to cut it anymore given the circumstances surrounding this situation.  Now, before we go any further, believe me when I say that I know exactly what is going to happen.  To most neutral parties, the White House event was about as much of a success as the UFC could have hoped for. They ended up having to cancel the prefight coverage and had a short delay due to weather, but after everything actually started moving, the weather held off. It didn't seem like the humidity really played any part in determining the outcomes, mostly because only the main event extended in any meaningful way. The fights themselves were all action for the most part and all ended inside the distance, which meant the casual fans stayed engaged.  Because of the shocking nature of the main event, and just how great of a fight it ended up being, we really haven't seen as much discourse about the co-main event of the evening. Cyril Gane knocked out Alex Pereira in the second round of their interim heavyweight championship fight. Pereira was making his attempt to capture a title in his 3rd weight class after transitioning from kickboxing over to MMA not all that long ago. There were a lot of questions with how he would adapt to such a massive jump in weight and unfortunately, I don't think we got a ton of answers just because of the nature of Cyril Gane as an opponent and how the fight ended up playing out. It ended up being a solid fight while it lasted and then Gane quickly put an end to it to capture the interim title for the second time in his career. It wasn't as crazy of a back and forth battle like the main event was, but it was my most highly anticipated fight of te night and I think it was that way for most ot...

 What a time to return to writing because it was just in time for one of the biggest upsets we've seen over the last handful of years and, at least from a narrative perspective, of all time. I know betting odds wise it won't make any list of the biggest upsets we've seen, but from a general public perspective, it really didn't feel like there was anyone giving Gaethje more than a punchers chance in this one. Even finding someone saying "well you never know" was hard to come by. It was almost a forgone conclusion that Topuria would win, it was just a matter of what method and how long it would be. Gaethje flipped all of that on it's head with one of, if not the best performance of his entire career.  It has been quite a long time since I did one of these and while it is exciting to be back, it does feel a little odd. On one hand, it feels like it has been forever, but also feels so familiar at the same time. A lot has happened since my last real post here. If you missed it in my previous update, I ended up not being able to keep up with this during grad school and now that I am graduated, I am back and ready to update this more regularly.
